Judicial Biographies

Free Electronic Resources

Fee-Based Electronic Resources
  • The Almanac of the Federal Judiciary contains judicial biographies, including media coverage, noteworthy decisions, and anonymous attorney evaluations. It is available electronically directly from the publisher (Aspen) http://online.aspenpublishers.com/judlib/ and on Westlaw (AFJ database). The Westlaw version does not contain the attorney evaluations. It is also available in print.

  • The Judicial Yellow Book has contact information and biographical sketches of all Federal judges and state appellate court judges. The Judicial Yellow Book is available on Lexis (LEXREF library; YBJUD file) and Westlaw (JUDYB database) and in print.

Print Resources
  • The American Bench: Judges of the Nation, provides biographical information on over 18,000 judges in all levels of federal, state and local courts with jurisdictional, structural and geographical facts as to the courts they serve, as provided by federal sources and by the individual states.

  • American Lawyer Media publishes several Bench Books about Texas Judges. The bench books include biographical information and the judge's courtroom preferences. Each judge provides insight into trial scheduling, motion practice, pretrial and trial procedures, decorum, pet peeves, as well as staff names and phone numbers. The series includes Bench Books for Dallas County; Harris County (Houston area); Tarrant County (Fort Worth area); Travis County (Austin area); and the West Texas Bench Book.

  • Texas Judge Reviews was published by James Publishing until 1999 but publication has ceased. The material is similar to that contained in the Almanac of the Federal Judiciary. This is a good source for information about those judges appointed before 1999.
