Hon. Shirley Butts

Shirley Butts was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, after which she traveled to California to attend California State University, graduating with honors. She then received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas Law School and an advanced law degree from the University of Virginia. She initially specialized in criminal law, beginning her career at the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office and ultimately became Chief of the Civil Division. Afterwards, she maintained a private law practice for 18 years in Fort Worth and San Antonio. She also taught at St. Mary’s University School of Law for several years before being appointed as an associate justice on the Fourth Court of Appeals – becoming the first female justice on that court. She was reelected twice. During her time on the bench, Justice Butts influenced and helped draft the Court’s Local Rules; and, during her distinguished career, she received numerous accolades from both local and state-wide legal organizations.
