Charles L. Black,
Sr., was an accomplished appellate practitioner long before appellate practice
became the specialty it is today. He
moved to Austin in 1913 and formed a partnership with Judge W. F. Ramsey. After Judge Ramsey returned to the banking
business, Mr. Black continued his practice with Chief Justice Nelson Phillips
and Associate Justices W. D. Hawkins and Thomas B. Greenwood. Mr. Black appeared 48 times before the Supreme
Court of Texas and 23 times before the Supreme Court of the United States. He argued his first case before the Supreme
Court of Texas in the early 1900s. He
was regarded by his peers, including Ireland Graves and Chief Justice Joe
Greenhill, as the finest Texas appellate advocate of his time. Upon his death, the Travis County Bar
Association and several law reviews recognized him as the “lawyer of the
century.” He was the father of Charles
L. Black, Jr., a renowned constitutional scholar.
