Helen A. Cassidy

Helen Cassidy graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston College of Law, after which she forged a 30-year career as an appellate specialist, staff attorney, and chief staff attorney of the Fourteenth Court of appeals. She first went into private practice and became an adjunct professor of law at the University of Houston. She then worked as Assistant Director and Staff Counsel for Inmates with the Texas Department of Corrections in Huntsville from 1979 to 1981. She also served as an administrative judge in the Houston District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Ms. Cassidy next worked for 15 years with the Fourteenth Court of Appeals and became one of the first Texas attorneys to achieve board certification in Civil Appellate Law – thereafter volunteering on the Board of Specialization’s Civil Appellate Law Examination Commission for more than a decade. She participated frequently as a CLE planning committee member, author, and speaker on issues of trial and appellate law and also as Chair of the Houston Bar Association Appellate Section. Later, she returned to private appellate practice. After she passed, the State Bar’s Appellate Section awarded the first Helen A. Cassidy Award, which is awarded annually to the person who garners the highest evaluation scores during the previous year’s Advanced Civil Appellate Practice Course.
